Global Cement and Concrete Association-India (GCCA-India) assigned the responsibility of preparing a comprehensive report on 'Comparative Evaluation of Embodied Carbon of High-rise and Low-rise Buildings in India' to the Low Carbon Construct Forum (LCCF). The objective of this exercise was to provide a broad guidance to the civil engineering fraternity in India. LCCF team used a typical high-rise (G+34) and Low-rise (G+3) building for the assessment of embodied carbon by seeking technical assistance from the leading architectural and structural engineering teams. The report has undergone revisions based on the comments from leading reviewing structural engineering team and members of GCCA-India’s Expert Committee.
The final report was launched by GCCA-India in collaboration with the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) at a workshop held at IIT Bombay on September 23, 2025. Er. Vijaykumar Kulkarni, Founder-Director of LCCF presented the salient features of the report during the workshop. This was followed by a Panel Discussion which witnessed lively discussions with the participation from leading experts and the delegates.

The GCCA-India-LCCF report emphasizes the importance of addressing embodied carbon in India’s building sector, which accounts for a significant share of national carbon emissions. With India’s commitment to achieving net zero by 2070, the findings provide actionable insights on material choices, concrete mixes, innovations in architectural/structural design and strategies to reduce embodied carbon emissions in the built environment.
The program ended with a strong appeal to Architects, Structural Engineers, Civil Engineers and other Stakeholders from the building and construction sector to ADVOCATE and PLEDGE to reduce carbon footprints.
