Experts’ Observations on GCCA-LCCF Publication
The Technical Report on “Comparative Evaluation of Embodied Carbon of High-rise and Low-rise Buildings in India” was launched during the Workshop, jointly held by the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) and Global Cement & Concrete Association (GCCA) at IITB, Mumbai on September 23, 2025. The report has been prepared jointly by the GCCA and Low Carbon Construct Forum (LCCF) with support from other stakeholders. A soft copy of the report can be downloaded from the link given below.

We are pleased to inform you that some of the leading experts from India have been kind enough to send their brief observations on the report. We are indeed thankful to all these experts. Select observations are enclosed below.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for sharing the Executive Summary of the Report on “Comparative Evaluation of Embodied Carbon from High-rise and Low-rise Buildings in India”. I also appreciate the link to the full report (which I have downloaded) and the update about its formal launch at IITB on September 13th, 2025.
This is a very timely and important contribution. The focus on embodied carbon in building design is essential for promoting sustainable practices, and the report will no doubt serve as a valuable reference for structural engineers, civil engineers, and architects. I just went through the full report and found that you have done a considerable amount of calculations for providing the Carbon intake of multistoried and low rise buildings. I hope that your efforts to bring a ‘Low Carbon Code’ through BIS will be realized soon.
Congratulations to you and your team at LCCF and associates for this important initiative, and to ICI and GCCA-India for their efforts in bringing such critical issues to the forefront.

Thank you for sharing the GCCA link. I have fully gone through the report. The report brings many insights related to low carbon construction. We will be taking many points for our net zero initiatives.
Low carbon construction also low cost construction. I think this statement needs to be emphasized for encouraging low carbon approach. Thank you

I ran through the report, it has come out well. I can give my views once I complete the reading.
You must be aware that BIS has recently started a new Division/Council on Environmental issues and some of the issues discussed in this report are being taken up there. In addition, please also go through the revised chapter 11 of National Building Code (NBC).

Please note that IS 3370 (Parts 3 and 4) have been since revised.

The Low Carbon Construct Forum (LCCF) — a not-for-profit beacon led by Vijay Kulkarni is working hard to create awareness on reducing carbon footprints. He and his team undertook the study comparing embodied carbon in high-rise and low-rise buildings, in collaboration with GCCA, TERI. I think it is right step in initiating sustainable construction in India. A long journey, but he is doing it tirelessly for a good cause. It’s environmental poetry in action.
